Light Horse Section

From humble beginnings, the Light Horse Section at Garstang and District Agricultural and Horticultural Show has become one of the largest and most respected in the North West.  Catering for all breeds from Shetlands to the magnificent heavyweight hunters, every size and type is catered for on the day.  In fact, 2008 sees the Show take on a truly international flavour as we welcome Gregory Goss from South Africa to judge our horses.

Now spanning 4 rings in total, entries have increased by 300% over the past 6 years under the guidance of Chairman, Ros Hargreaves.  Qualifiers are held in all sections, the most prestigious being those for Hacks, Cobs and Riding Horses to attend the Horse of the Year Show.  It has been a particular source of gratification to the organisers that all horses which qualified at Garstang go on to be well-placed at the NEC, proving that we have on show the very best in the country.  We are also represented by our Ridden Hunter section at the following year's Royal International Horse Show, a privilege offered to only a handful of shows in the UK.  New in that section for 2008 is the Ladies' Hunter class, an elegant affair in which ladies ride side-saddle.

Other qualifiers include Ponies UK, British Show Pony Society, Northern Counties Pony Association, Coloured Horse and Pony Society, British Show Horse Association National Championships, Sport Horse Breeding (GB) National Championships and The Veteran Horse and Pony Society's Area Qualifiers.  Many points systems are also in place for competitors from all sections.

We are delighted that Garstang Agricultural Show has gone from strength to strength in the Light Horse Section, and the Committee will continue to work hard to maintain its very high standards.

We look forward to seeing you there!
